Fur as 'Soft Gold'

A variety of goods are dubbed as 'gold,' but only expensive fur is labeled as 'soft gold.' Fur used to be a symbol of luxury and prestige not just clothing. In the 16th century, fur was used as decoration in France and in the 17th century, as legal tender in Russia. During the 19th century, due to the extinction of fur-bearing animals, expensive fur became the monopoly of very rich people. In the beginning of the 20th century, the top three fur supplying countries were Russia, USA and Canada. Almost at the same time, fur auctions came forth, some of which exist till now and dictate taste, quantity and even quality to fur lovers in the world. According to experts, the most costly fur is chinchilla fur, though it is less durable than others. Though considered valuable by Native American civilizations, it wasn't immediately accepted in the countries of the European conquerors. In the 19th century, it ranked as the tenth most expensive fur. The reason was that noble women thought that chinchilla fur darkens the color of their faces. But in spite of that, it was still a part of their wardrobes. The white marten also bears the sign of aristocracy and elegancy connected with many legends. The movie industry, specifically Hollywood, made way for fox and mink fur. These, and many other types of fur, are of better quality if they belong to female fur-bearing animals.

A Symbolic Supremacy
A Symbolic Supremacy
Elisabeth II is regarded as the most famous symbolically supreme monarch in the World. Her authority is best described by her title which states that, in addition to Great Britain and Northern Ireland, she is the supreme leader of 15 countries. That means 1.7 billion people, who constitute about 30% of the world population, are under her reign. Besides, the Queen retains sovereignty over 14 territories (some of them uninhabited) outside the British Isles. Her reign is the longest in the history of Great Britain; she's been carrying the crown, which is considered the highest symbol of the executive authority, for over 54 years now. In the Royal Family, only the Queen has immunity from prosecution. Her sovereignty reaches over air and sea, as she is the supreme leader of the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The Queen, who has a great influence in many fields apart from politics, has established a record as a monarch who appears on paper money more than any other monarch; there are more than 182 million currency bills with her pictures on them. The Queen has an official coat of arms which is the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom. These arms are used by the Queen in her official capacity as monarch of the UK and are officially known as her Arms of Dominion. The crest is a guardant lion wearing the imperial crown. Her reign can be described as; "Time changes, but the Queen is eternal," which contradicts with the reality - the Queen reigns, but doesn't rule… because she predominates.

The New Year magic of the Vienna Opera Ball
The New Year magic of the Vienna Opera Ball
Johann Strauss's matchless music is heard in the ballrooms abound with light, and in the buoyant melody of Waltz the spirit of a continual fairy tale is born in the city of traditions, Vienna. In Austria, which is famous for its musical lifestyle, more than 300 traditional Vienna Opera Balls start on New Year Eve and last until March. Until the 19th century, the age-old ballrooms in Vienna were reserved only for the Nobility, but later they were separated to royal and public ones. At the Hofburg palace, the guests are welcomed by artists impersonated as Empress Sissi and Emperor Franz Joseph, and in the ballrooms, decorated with millions of flowers, dance couples glide and circle delicately. But the most luxurious ball in Austria and all of Europe is the Opera Ball that takes place annually on the last Thursday of the carnival season and is 129 years old. It is as important as a state banquet because the President of Austria, as well as foreign dignitaries and world-famous celebrities are among the guests. Those attending the Vienna Opera Ball for the first time have to know that the dress code is evening dress: white tie and tails for men and floor-length ball gowns for women. Today, the music of the Balls is a fusion of classical and modern that goes along with Waltz and quadrille.

The titles of Monsieur Cognac, the noble alcoholic beverage
To understand all the fine 'tenderness' of cognac, one should treat the beverage nobly. In accordance with the 1909 decree, France legally declared that cognac is genuine only if it's produced in France. The noble Frenchmen refused to give their names to beverages, unless they were made from grapes growing in the Cognac region and using the special production technology. Historically, there were 200-300 cognac producing families in France. The number in the market is reduced to a mere 50 nowadays, 10 of which ranking as the best. Details, like the age and taste of a certain cognac, are given in the abbreviations found on the label. Originally, cognac was considered a digestif accompanying cigars, but at the end of the 20th century it became a gastronomic beverage. Cognac is served in a big transparent glass, the snifter, which has the form of a tulip with narrowing upper part. This makes the aroma stronger and allows the full display of the color. The glass is held in a way, so that the neck is located between the ring and middle fingers, leaving the upper part in the palm. In the hand cognac gets warmer, thus filling the glass with the full-bodied aroma.

Armen Petrosian's seven important facts about caviar
If you are an aesthete who adores caviar, this review is just for you. A lot of people don't have the slightest idea of the correct way of eating the true caviar. If it is high-quality caviar, you should eat it without any additives in order to sense its real taste. The caviar we buy is the primary product. We separate the eggs and add salt to them. Next comes the quality purification and then the unique caviar ripening which is very important. After these steps only, the highest quality Petrossian Caviar is prepared using a secret technology. The location or sea is not important; it's the type of the fish that counts. There's no commodity and delicacy in the world as exceptional and specific with high quality characteristics as caviar and it isn't an indispensable part of luxury life, but a lifestyle in itself. One shouldn't eat caviar only because it is caviar. We cannot get first-rate caviar if the primary product isn't of high quality. There is nothing common between black and red caviar as they are two totally different worlds. Specialists consider even the slightest idea of comparison as nonsense. Red caviar is not caviar because it is either salmon or any other fish roe. In France, even law forbids to name red roe caviar.

Cigar Preferences
This review will help you make the right choice for cigar formats. Format doesn't only mean the length or diameter of a cigar, but also the weight and smoking duration. The latter is determined when 2/3 of a cigar is burnt. Depending on the size, cigars are divided into two types; cigarillos and cigars, which can have straight or figured shapes. According to the length and diameter, cigars are divided into three main groups: 'slim' or 'tight,' 'standard' and 'heavy' or 'thick.' There are some factors in choosing the right format. One of these factors is shortage of time. That's the reason why aficionados often prefer smaller-sized Robusto and Corona types. The format of the cigar also affects the richness of the taste; the larger the diameter, the tastier the cigar, because in this case more types of tobacco leaves are used. The length also affects the taste of a cigar as it stays longer in the mouth and gives richer feelings to the smoker. The smoker's psychology is another factor affecting the taste of the cigar as they say: "Tell me the size of your cigar, and I'll tell you who you are." But, first of all, bear in mind a simple truth; don't look at the time while smoking a cigar, just enjoy it.

Diamonds, the true value of life
Since ancient times, diamonds have been considered to have magical powers that bring success and health to their owners. People have been terrified with and have admired the stones that glow in the dark. Native Americans thought that human spirits were born as diamonds. Greeks considered them tears of Gods, and their philosophers persuaded people that the stones were given out to men and women and even had the power to help give birth. Hundreds of years ago, diamonds were used only as talismans and not as jewelry, that's why people didn't even think about diamond cutting. Possibly, the first uncut diamond jewelry was the crown of the Hungarian king (1074), and the mass production of diamonds in Europe started only 400 years later. It is sad to know that diamond mining and production is sometimes connected with evildoing, torture and murder. Each cut on a diamond can tell a story of inhuman conditions in diamond mines. After the long procedure of cutting and polishing, the stones are sold in high prices on their own or set on gold, and become a part of diamond-lovers' collections.

The predominance of Swiss banks
The first thing we remember about Switzerland is its banks. The largest Swiss banks, that serve world millionaires, have funds bigger than the Government budget. This fact allows these banks to freely undertake banking activities in the higher levels of the world economy. They create new definitions, new influence sectors: the destiny of a significant amount of the planet's wealth depends on them. The long history of banking in Switzerland brought financial stability to the country's economy and trust to its banking system, in spite of low interest rate, and the social and political stability in its turn favored the development of the financial and economic systems. Swiss banks are in the top list of world's largest banks, first of all due to the power of their funds. Another reason for their success is that the banks in Switzerland are international. Besides, Swiss banks are the most loyal in regard to bank secrecy - the Swiss Parliament passed the Banking Law of 1934, which codifies the rules of secrecy and criminalizes its violation. One of the economic novelties introduced by Swiss banks is the Status account and payment service that verifies how important and appreciated customers are.

Truffles, more expensive than gold
One kilogram of truffles is more expensive than gold, and people would pay thousands of dollars to enjoy eating just a few grams of this underground fungus. In Ancient Rome, people used to pay a great deal of gold for African truffles and they couldn't even imagine that the royal fungus grows right under their feet. And when in the 15th century they finally discovered the national treasure, they began to worship it right away. There are two types of truffles; white and black. White truffles are ten times more expensive than the French black ones, which are more abundant. That's why it's the only delicacy in the world that is more expensive than black caviar, foie gras and even gold. It was famous in Ancient Rome and Greece for its unique flavor. The scent of the divine fungi was highly esteemed by the Egyptian Pharaohs who passed the worship of fungi to Ancient Romans. Some people could smell the nutmeg smell of a tortured man's body in truffles. Sumerians thought that truffles possess magical characteristics, and in the Middle Ages they were used during rites and rituals as a mediator between people and evil forces.

The largest art thefts in the 21st century
Recently, art theft and illegal resale has become one of the largest rapidly growing illegal businesses in the world. According to the figures provided by the FBI, the total value of stolen art in the whole world is around 8 billion dollars annually. Each month, over 1000 works of art are stolen, mostly commissioned by dedicated private collectors. In other cases, the criminals sell the stolen art 5-10 times cheaper to art dealers in the black market, who in their turn plan to resell them in 10-20 years as authorized copies. Very often the stolen painting ends up in the hands of the mafia who use it in barter trade with drug barons. The recent largest art thefts are: Renoir's Young Parisian and Conversation with a Gardner, Rembrandt's Self Portrait, Van Gogh's The Old Cemetery Tower at Nuenen, View of the Sea at Scheveningen and Blooming Chestnut Branches, Leonardo Da Vinci's Madonna of the Yarnwinder, Edvard Munch's The Scream and Madonna, Paul Cezanne's Boy in the Red Vest, Edgar Degas' Ludovic Lepic and his Daughter, Claude Monet's Poppy Field at Vetheuil, Pablo Picasso's Portrait of Suzanne Bloch, Candido Portinari's O Lavrador de Cafe, Caravaggio's The Taking of Christ as well as Benvenuto Cellini's golden Saliera.

The Romanovs, rulers of the third Rome
Though in Russia their rule lasted three centuries, the roots of their power go much deeper and older. The Romanovs rose to power first as boyars, who became tsars in 1613 and imperators in 1721. They were generally rulers who compared themselves religiously-mystically with the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire, declaring themselves their legal successors. The rulers of the 'Third Rome' and the old Rome had much in common: the coat of arms of the Russian Empire is almost identical to that of the Eastern Roman Empire, the term Tsar is derived from the Roman Caesar and the family name Romanov from the name Roman, which in its turn from the Latin word Romanus, meaning "a native of Rome." At the beginning of the 20th century, the Romanovs had the opportunity to become the rulers of the world. According to some studies, other world powers took part in their downfall in order to prevent such developments. The ancestors of the Romanovs had come to the one-time small underdeveloped Russia from Prussia, Lithuania in the last quarter of the13th century, and the five sons of Andrey Ivanovich Kobyla, founder of the dynasty, had given birth to the ancestors of 17 Russian Royal Families. The Romanovs' reign began and ended in the same territory of the Hypatian Monastery, and the first and the last emperors' name was the same - Mikhail.

Afghan opium – fight against opium or imitation of fight?
It is widely thought that those fighting drug trade, are the most interested in the profits of the trade, and the stricter the fight against drugs, the wider the growth and higher the prices. At first, this opinion sounds controversial, but one can prove it right by studying the developments in Afghanistan during the last few decades. When you discover the details of those developments, specifically, the fact how the Taliban, advocating fundamental Islamism, fought against drug mafia and simultaneously fostered drug trade as the best tool for "getting food" and solving political problems; how the US, invading Afghanistan, created the prerequisites for the growth of opium export disguising it with "establishing law and order in the country," you understand that the fight against drugs is really illogical, controversial and arguable. Moreover, the US cannot leave everything and withdraw from Afghanistan, first of all, because of drugs. What's the size of the opium poppy cultivation territory? Where are the deadly laboratories located at? Why can't they be destroyed, even with the availability of technologically developed weapons - satellites and guided missiles? Or is the answer that everything here, from the presence of the Americans to the production of drugs, is closely interconnected!?

Dmitri Medvedev, the personal style of the Russian leader
The first guest of our new section is the president of the Russian Federation, Dmitri Medvedev, who has always worked on his looks, while climbing up his political career ladder. He is one of those young presidents that excelled his European colleagues not only in age, but also in dictating fashion trends. In an interview given to Paris Match, he confesses that he likes the so-called 'dandy style' and is also a big fan of Franck Muller watches. It is worth noting that Medvedev is as elegant and convincing in his formal dress-code, as in business casual style and in wearing simple and 'easy' clothes. The knot of his necktie is modern not classic, and the sleeves of his shirts have elegant stylish buttons. His favorite brands for suits are Brioni and Kiton. Comparing his styles before becoming prime-minister and after becoming president, we observe a lot of changes. And that's how he was able to wage a successful presidential campaign to achieve his goal !

Cigar preferences
New beginning aficionados, who attend cigar shops, often raise a question, "Why do we need so many cigar formats if their thickness differs just by several millimeters? Wouldn't it be easier to limit oneself to 5-10 formats, so as not to get mixed up? How to choose the cigar of an appropriate format in the end?" It happened so that there is no definite criterion responsible for cigar formats classification. But there is nothing bad in it, as cigar production is an art. And as we know it is impossible to streamline the art as well as classify and frame it. And do we actually need it? By their sizes cigars are divided into 2 basic types: cigarillos or small cigars, and real cigars. Cigarillos, in turn, are divided into straight and figured. At the end of the 20s of the previous century Havana factory Rafael Gonzales started producing pretty expensive cigars of a peculiar form by earl Lonsdale's order. However this format became popular and classic with the lapse of time.

Barack Obama. Person who has his own style
US President Barack Obama is a pretty unique person. This is a figure whose appearance in White house has turned to be a breach that broke the public opinion. During his election campaign the first black president had several tasks, and solving them would give him a chance to become a temporary resident-ruler of White house. The first task was to break the existing stereotypes concerning the perception of his candidacy to the presidential post. The second one was to compete with a non-ordinary person, Hillary Clinton within the Democratic party. He is tall, slender, athletic- a godsend for modelers. The most famous fashion houses dedicate him their collections. Models appear on the podiums in shirts, the sleeves of which are rolled up to elbows, and without a tie, that is one of Barack Obama's image features, used in an official style either. Such a famous couturier as Tom Ford is ready to sew for him personally, and Donatella Versace dedicated him her spring-summer collection 2009.

New York. The most prestigious and expensive urban districts
If the architecture of Paris personifies luxury, architecture of London –nobility and beauty, and gigantomania with some elements of neglect is concentrated in Moscow architecture, then New York appears as a combination of these tree capitals, with its unique architecture and people. New York city is the biggest city of New York state ( it is also called Empire State). However, curiously enough, New York city is not a capital of the state (this role is carried by Albany). Actually New York city is a Jewish city. It is said that there are more Jews in New York than in all the Israeli cities taken together. New York is the only city in the world, where thousands of buildings have special services: there are twenty-four-hour security systems, and the buildings' front door looks like halls of five-star hotels. The concierge is always wearing a uniform and he is responsible to catch a taxi for residents and their guests, to carry their stuff and to solve some trivial domestic problems. New York is divided into 5 districts or boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island.

Silvio Berlusconi The most unpredictable and eccentric politician
The prime minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi is an odious figure. He became a prime minister three times. No one else in the history of Italian republic managed it. Berlusconi is a person who has created his image himself. Berlusconi owns more than a half of the Italian media market, and he is the richest man of the country. Despite his all innovation and eccentricity in running a business, the head of Italian government is conservative in dress-code, and he seldom changes his habits and weaknesses. It is already 30 years that he has been using the services of one tailor (Karachini), one seamstress (Mairi), who has been sewing shirts for him, and shoes has being ordered from Albertini. However if Berlusconi suddenly comes to like a shop, nothing will prevent him from becoming a permanent customer of a favorite brand. For example, the prime minister used to buy colorful cotton shirts and white shirts with handmade sleeves for studs from Kiton.

Haute Couture is getting younger.
Fashion tendencies of spring-summer 2010. Being born and developed in Paris for the last 150 years, the whole epoch of creative art Haute Couture came to the end with the great and luxurious designer Yves Saint-Laurent's death in 2008 and closing of Christian Lacroix fashion house in 2009. Who will continue the traditions of the consummate mastery? There is the "Big Four" of the French fashion houses : Christian Dior, Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, that is among 12 official members Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Such young and talented candidates as Annе Valerie Hash and Adeline Andre will probably join them in order to revive the spirit of great French Haute Couture, established by Charles Frederick Vert. The pessimistic view points concerning the luxurious culture's loss of traditions have probably some ground. On the spring-summer Haute Couture fashion show in 2010 Lagerfeld did not display the little black dress by Chanel, new creators Valentino Maria Curie and Pière Piccoli limited the collection to just one red dress, and a new beginning couturier of Givenchy Ricardo Tisci fashion house chose the mixture of gothic and disco styles instead of traditional glamour.
Couture is becoming not only French possession; spring-summer collections luxurious dresses of young talents from Asia, such as Libyans Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad, have proven their honorable place in the list of modern creators Haute Couture.

Dubai.
Luxury in exchange for history

There are a lot of examples in the history, that show what a decisive role have played the huge stocks of oil, their output and the export in the development and the well-being of this or that country. But what happened with UAE and especially with its principal Emirate, Dubai, within the last 4 decades, can't be compared with anything. World economists and experts work out various theories and formulas aiming to understand the secret of the unprecedented development of Dubai as precisely as it is possible. In reality the formula is very simple: in the Dubai phenomenon besides the mythical oil-dollars, the successful geographical location of the port has its special place in it, owing to which Dubai has become a focal point on the crossing of various trade roads, which lead to four corners of the world. As far back as the second half of the 19th century the city became the main port in the Gulf of Persia and for the last decades it yet more widened its scales. At present there are three huge sea-ports in Dubai: Khamria, Rashid and Gebel-Ali, and the cost of the load which passes through the ports of Dubai, exceeds 200 million dirhams (10AED= US$ 2.667) within a year.

Bordeaux wine, the taste and the smell of perfection
The wine-making of Bordeaux is always modernistic; it is not by chance that wine-makers consider its history of development as the biography of the legend. Bordeaux wine is the most mentioned brand in mass media, and collectors of the expansive drinks consider their collections to be of full value only if they, at least, comprise several bottles of wine, produced in well-known Bordeaux. The wine from that province is not only very delicious drink, but also an original symbol of France. The whole civilized world has long ago admitted and adjusted itself to the monopoly of France in the sphere of wine. And Bordeaux, undoubtedly, is the center of wine-making. Wine is not just adored in France; here the strictest demands are produced for its production, which are kept by, already, the 20th generation of the wine-makers. The French are also proud of the peculiar technology of the production, owing to which Bordeaux wine has its place among the noble drinks.

Safari-the most modern mode of hunting
Man has been hunting since prehistoric times. Hunting was one of the principle methods of obtaining food in primitive society. Later on, simultaneously with the emergence of new sources for existence, hunting gradually lost its main importance, yet remained one of the principle forms of entertainment. As a result various types of shooting entertainments developed, hunting became the pastime of aristocrats and rich men. Hunting, at its actual form, is exceptional and irreplaceable entertainment, which is accessible only to rich men and aristocrats. Hunting, of course, nowadays is something different than it was before. It would have been impossible that human acquisitions and new geographical openings didn not have their influence on this form of leisure, and in this way the notion of safari came into being. The word safari firstly stood for hunting excursions through East Africa. Later on this notion started to be used in other regions of Africa and of the world as well, and its meaning essentially changed. Nowadays the word safari often signifies quite peaceful excursions in wild nature, on which beasts are photographed. In several countries a complete industry has developed around safari.

Space tourism expensive ticket to another world
So, what exactly is space tourism? To begin with we will give the definition of the notion. The term space tourism refers to the opportunity of a person or a group of people to travel into the space for a fee. The very idea of such flights may have appeared much earlier than the beginning of space exploration. Recall, for example, the science fiction writers: aren not they ideologists of the movement? The first major works devoted to space tourism apply to 1967, when Barron Hilton published a series of his articles. In 1984 the first series of publications by David Ashford on creating aircraft for tourist flights into space came out. 17 years later, in 2001, the world learned the name of the first space tourist. It was an American entrepreneur and multimillionaire of Italian origin - Dennis Tito.

Romance
The third chapter of the diary

And once again welcome, Dear Reader! Slowly but surely obeying the laws of nature, warm spring gives up his possessions to the hot, sunny summer. It is a pity that recently the beautiful spring has changed, becoming an unstable and excessively rainy season. But in past years paintings, poetry, even whole poems were devoted to spring... I could not help remembering the wonderful line of great Scottish poet Robert Burns: If you were there, if you were there.
Or were I monarch of the globe, With you to reign, with you to reign, The brightest jewel in my crown Would be my queen, would be my queen. What wonderful words! How beautifully it is said! And about what, you think, did he write? That's right, a cigar! Yes, it's about our "silent friend".

Prince William, having learned much from bitter experiences of her mother, very severely limits the press attention to his personal life: the history of relations between the young royal couple is not much known. William and Kate’s union largely violates the classical tradition the Windsor family. Keith is older than William for six months, her parents are middle-class people, who have become unbelievably wealthy thanks to their own business of forwarding children's gifts Party Pieces. Michael and Carole Elizabeth Middleton did their best for their daughter to study in the best schools and universities. By coincidence, after a year of sabbatical leave spent in travel, Kate and William entered the faculty of art history at the University of St. Andrews.

Steel luxury
The history of cold weapon can be compared with the history of humankind: even in the Stone Age its primitive types were used in hunting and in internecine wars. Of the hundreds of species of various weapons daggers made of Damascus steel are highlighted. The appearance of the name "Damascus steel" is often attributed to the medieval Crusades. Despite the fact that this view is quite common, there is no evidence of it in nowadays literary sources. There are three hypotheses on the derivation of the phrase “Damascus sword”. “Water” in Arabic is “Damas”, and the blades also have a special design, reminiscent of the water surface. Some Islamic authors argue that the swords were produced and bound in Damascus, and their name is connected with this fact. The third version is connected with the name of a gunsmith – Damask, who made swords of cast steel. Any of these hypotheses, if not all of them, may well be true.
